Mound City National Cemetery Preservation Commission
We welcome you...

Few places offer such a powerful story of sacrifice and history as the Mound City National Cemetery. Situated on fourteen acres at the junction of two historic roads in southernmost Illinois, the cemetery directly links to the region’s Civil War heritage. Of the more than 9,600 buried here, greater than half – including more than 2,700 unknowns – served during the Civil War.

About

"The Mound City National Cemetery Preservation Commission invites you to explore this hallowed ground. We’re volunteers dedicated to the preservation of this site and all for which it stands. We encourage you to visit and learn from those at rest here. They speak to us about sacrifice and history in a way that words alone cannot."

celebrate Memorial Day 2023

We observe Memorial Day on the Saturday of the Memorial Day weekend – everyone is welcome. The Mound City National Cemetery Memorial ceremony is among the oldest in the region and dates to the years right after the Civil War. The ceremony begins at 10 o’clock and includes the Call to Order, Presentation of Colors, Laying of the Wreaths, and the Roll Call of Honorees. The ceremony also includes a guest speaker and music.
